Christine Baker | Monday, December 27, 1999 - 06:44 am The last few years I've spent a lot of time sleeping in tents and campers, I've experienced weather more than most people. First the awful storms were attributed to El Nino, then La Nina, and this year I have yet to hear an explanation. I've been looking at property in Alaska, but I'm not so sure anymore. The changing ocean currents in the Northern hemisphere could very quickly cause extreme cooling, and I don't really want to own a glacier. On Xmas Eve I talked to my sister in central Germany. She was aware of the major storm a few weeks ago that hit England and the Scandinavian countries with record winds and damages. She mentioned how she had been worried about the trees on her horse pasture. The very next day, those trees were leveled. Fortunately she was NOT near the center of the storm. Australia recently got hit with a 180 mph typhoon, Salt Lake City had deadly tornados last summer. The strongest tornados are rated F5, yet the midwest actually had tornados with wind speeds of an F6. My Dad has a canal front duplex at the Florida gulf coast. When I recommend he sell it, he says he'd like nothing better than the insurance paying for a new building. Well, I think the insurance companies will stop paying, sooner or later. Drinking WATER is a MAJOR issue in the SW. I really like New Mexico and Arizona, but sooner or later many areas won't have any water left. Already some people are drinking their sewage. That just doesn't appeal to me. I'm in the difficult situation that I can go anywhere. I've got some money, but not enough to not care when my house gets flooded or blown away. And of course there's the prospect of dying like those many thousands in Venezuela. Obviously nobody can read the future. But I highly recommend people get out their chain saws and cut back any trees that could fall on their house. And as tempting as a mile of beach in Costa Rica sounds (I just read that posting again) there is no way that I'll get into ocean front property. Christine |
