Christine Baker (Admin) | Monday, April 24, 2000 - 03:18 pm In June 98 I nearly got arrested when I went to a collection place in person after phone/fax communications got me nowhere. I had mailed the microfiche copy of the cancelled check to the collection agency via certified mail. They continued to send me their form letter demanding payment and threatening my credit rating. I called and faxed, and those morons at the collection agency refused to put in writing that the microfiche "original" cancelled check from Home Savings of America was not readable enough to be proof of payment. I could clearly read the date it was deposited into the Pacific Bell account at Bank of America. I decided to make a trip to San Jose to go to the collection agency to make sure that they actually had the check and if it really wasn't good enough for them, I wanted a written statement so that I could take action against Home Savings. The manager pulled my file, they had the check, he said it wasn't good enough. So I asked for a written statement. He refused and walked away. I told him I'd wait until he gave me something in writing. He responded that I could sit there all day, so I got really pissed. My curses resulted in a lot of laughs for the collectors in the back room. So I picked up the monitor on the counter and asked if I needed to break something to get their attention. The manager then asked me to hit him, pointing at his head. I was holding the keyboard and asked if he really wanted me to hit him. He assured me that's what he wanted, so I "tapped" his shoulder with the keyboard. One of the collectors ran to the door and locked it while another collector called the cops. It was obvious that they do this frequently for their entertainment. They didn't press charges, but the cops told me that I was to stay away from the place and if I didn't agree to that they'd arrest me. If it hadn't been for my dog in the hot car, I would have gone to jail. I really don't think that I have to stay away from a place that continually writes to me that they are reporting a collection on my credit and refuses to state in writing that the original cancelled check provided by my bank isn't good enough. Good thing I'm hundreds of miles away .... and I don't need credit. I can laugh about it now. At the time I just wanted to kill somebody. I was SOOOO frustrated. I had gone through tremendous efforts to maintain a good credit rating, thousands of hours of disputes wasted. I took off to Oregon for a couple of weeks, did a lot of thinking, decided to sell my house. I gave up ... |
