I'm looking for

* cgi
* ftp
* telnet
* access + error logs

* COMPETENT E-mail support with 24 hr response time

Nice to have:

* a name on staff E-mail
* crontabs

OF COURSE I'd like the servers to be up all the time, I don't want to run out of space on their server because they put too many accounts on it, I want to have sufficient bandwidth so my pages load, they should have power backup, etc. I.e. I'm looking for a real company, not somebody's box in a back room.

I'm willing to pay about $50/month, would be nice if I could host more than one domain on one account, in that case I'd be willing to pay a little more.

If anyone has any leads, please post!

Hi Christine,

I would suggest going to www.aitcom.com or webhosters.com and also webhosting.com. The prices are really affordable.

My company uses aitcom.com because they run a full OC-12 bandwidth with a PSINet backbone on an OC-48 and their tech support is 24/7. The prices vary really on each server that you look at.

We haven't had any problems for 2 years since we switched over to them.

Hope this helps.

Nick

Thanks! I just looked at the aitcom site and if smarthosting.com doesn't get any better, I'll move there.

Appreciate your post!

Christine

I WANT TO REGISTER ".myname" WITH NONE OF THE .net .org .com GARBAGE EVERYBODY IS TRYING TO SELL.
ALSO I WANT TO HAVE FULL CONTROL OF MY OWN NAME WITH NOBODY TRYING TO DICTATE THEIR FORM OF NET GOVERNMENT ON ME.
I FOUND ONE SIGHT "EMAGNET" THAT OFFERS THE SERVICE BUT THEIR "SEARCH DOMAIN NAME" FEATURE DOES NOT WORK AND AFTER DAYS OF TRYING THEY HAVE NOT EMAILED ME BACK
CAN YOU PLEASE HELP ME OUT? I WOULD REALLY APRECIATE ANY INFORMATION ANYBODY SENT ME.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.

Did you mean you want yourname.com or yourname.net or yourname.org ? If so, go to www.networksolutions.com and click on the WHOIS lookup (search on the top half their page for this link)

Christine,

If you ever have any of these problems again, I'd gladly host Bayhouse for you. I've got a professional-grade connection (1.1mb Frac), two servers - one running FreeBSD and another running Win2K... Both are on dual UPS's. Uptime on the unix box is up around 85 days now... Full DNS/SMTP/etc. services. All this for the AMAZING price of free! (well, maybe $10 a month would be nice). I host a couple of other not-for-profit sites.

Just an offer....

-Dave

Dave, appreciate your offer! I already prepaid hosting for a couple of years or so, and haven't had any major problems. But one never knows, web hosts are notorious for overselling, I'm crossing my fingers. Thanks!

And I just want to add that I DID sign up with AIT. I wasn't able to log in, as they screwed up the setup. When they finally fixed it, I asked for a credit for the several weeks I couldn't use the account. It turned out that they are not the kind of company I want to do business with. I never moved the domain to AIT, because their support sucked so bad.

That was a LOOOONG time ago. I had prepaid for 3 months and cancelled after only a few weeks. Yet, they didn't close my account. They were upset when the next auto debit got declined because the credit card number had changed or something. I told them that the account was supposed to be closed a long time ago.

They kept threatening to close my account. I was demanding they close my account. They threatened with collections.

I've written and explained that I don't want their service so many times, I gave up. I've requested numerous times that they not contact me again.

Just yesterday I got about 5 more invoices from AIT. I just delete their e-mails now, don't even read them.

Is there anything I can do to get them to stop sending me their invoices and newsletters?
