| | Saturday, January 15, 2000 - 12:39 pm When I first opened my account in Feb. 99, VoiceStream service was superlative in all respects. They took my $1,000 deposit without any arguments and did NOT run my credit (unlike AT&T) Initial problems getting data access to work were resolved by excellent voice and e-mail tech support. Their (rarely advertised) InfoStream data service is only $30/month. I'm using the Nokia 5900 with the optional analog sleeve. I got set up with everything including data cable for under $400. No modem is required for this service, the data cable goes through the serial port. While I was in Alaska for the summer I discontinued service, as I just had their 19.95 no contract voice service. Unfortunately, I had tremendous problems getting the service reactivated upon my return in October. Instead of activating Infostream and the basic voice service, they put me on a $10 suspend plan and $5 calling plan, AND they charged a $25 reconnect fee. When I called, nobody found this absurd billing strange. It took NUMEROUS calls until I finally got a supervisor who issued credits and activated the phone so I could make calls. I had to argue with him too. Why on earth should I pay a reactivation fee when I can go to any reseller and have FREE activation, MORE minutes, FREE $5 calling plan and a FREE phone? A while back I saw a news story on VoiceStream, their stock has gone up TREMENDOUSLY. And a few days ago I got an invoice with a late charge, although the previous bill stated: "Do not pay ...." When I called about it, she looked up the previous bill and agreed, but concluded the late charge must be from an even earlier bill. While she was looking, I got disconnected. I didn't call back. Looks like VoiceStream is going the way of GTE. They get big and immediately start to suck. The good news is that their coverage expanded a lot in NM and AZ, and GSM data is FAR superior to cellular. www.voicestream.com
