| | Sunday, June 04, 2000 - 08:12 pm Knowing that I have poor credit (and trying to repair it) and knowing that I don't want to have additional "hits" to my credit report only to be turned down for service, I thought I couldn't get a cell phone.....BUT- we heard about this plan from SBC called "Balance Checker". Has anyone heard about it or have any experience with it. SUPPOSEDLY, it works like this (quoting from the brochure): "With Balance Checker, available for an additional $10, you can select the service offering that is best for you. When you activate service, you will be required to pay a one-time activation fee and your first month's access. Your account will be activated with an $80 spending threshold. If your account reaches a spending level between $50 and $80, we will attempt to provide you with reminders (voice message notices) that your account is approaching the $80 spending threshold. If your account exceeds the spending threshold, your service may be interrupted. You remain responsible for all charges incurred, including those in excess of the spending threshold." According to the rep at the kiosk, their checks SUPPOSEDLY don't affect your credit scores and that they use a different standard then "the big 3". 1) Is this a good deal? 2) Does it (like any other cell phone plan) affect your credit scores? Any/all input would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and BTW, this is for IL/MO (St. Louis metro area). Thanks!

| | Monday, June 05, 2000 - 01:01 am I don't know about this plan or company at all, but NEVER believe what the sales people TELL you. Cell phone sales people seem to be competing with used car sales people. Any time I've checked on prepaid plans they turned out to be MUCH more expensive than the regular plans. Just looked at VoiceStream at http://www.voicestream.com/products/services/es_rates.asp and I would switch if those minutes didn't expire! I rarely use my cell phone but it seems cheaper to pay the $20/month and occasionally I even get to use the free minutes and long distance. I gave VoiceStream $1,000 to avoid the credit check, and that seems to be the industry standard. AT&T took my $1,000 and then ran my credit anyway.
