I haven't seen this topic being discussed. I am trying to help someone (not me!--i've been down the ch7 road)clear their credit report. I am worried about them sending in letters with their new address since they have outstanding debts but have moved. They'll need to give their new address to the cra which means if a collector pulls the report, they'll know where to send the summons, letter or whatever. Am I being too paranoid? they only have one more year for the sol to expire.
If anyone has any experience as a former collector, can they provide any insight on methods to track debtors?

I use http://www.docusearch.com/ to track down my debtors. Go there, put in the person's name and old address and they'll email you their new address in 24 hours. No hit, no fee.

That sure is an enlightening link. Belize is looking better every day. I sure am glad I used private mail boxes FAR AWAY for everything. And I'm NOT worried about creditors, but I DO believe in the RIGHT to privacy.

Senator, don't they have any current creditors who report the new address?

Also, if they work, have a driver's license or car registered with their current address, a creditor who is actively looking should be able to find them quickly and they probably get this a info a lot cheaper than at that site.

Because most collectors only check the credit, they might want to open a private mail box, possibly out of State as the NEW address for the bureaus. They need to have relatives or friends whose address they can use to open a PMB out of State. Don't know if it's worth the effort and expense.

Forgive my ignorance but what or where is Belize?

Anyway docusearch will find you. If you've ever owned a phone, had cable, electricity, or gas in your name or if you've ever applied for credit or anything they'll find you. I used them to find a girl who was hiding from a guy who kidnapped her. Not only did they give me her current address, but I got her employer's name and I called her at work. She was very shocked.

Privacy? No such thing.

I didn't think that the credit card companies reported addresses --I thought it was only the amount due by social security number and credit card number. I could be wrong but I remember when I first started clearing my cra reports they had the old address until I proved who I was with a utility bill.
This person's cars are all in the spouse's name. The driver's license still has the old address.
Interesting.

This may be of some interest on the issue of privacy. A woman can get a new social security number if she is being stalked, harassed or abused so that she is more difficult to find for the exact scenario as Shylock described. I worked for a shelter a few years back and that route was taken in a number of particularly violent cases. The SSN change was very successful in helping some of them start over financially with a new identity. I don't know if the government still allows it. I remember thinking at the time that anyone who wanted to obtain a new SSN to avoid their bills or start over might abuse the government's discretion in such matters.
The troubling part is that if a collector can find you, so can anyone else. That includes maniacs.

And to your point Senator, I don't get it exactly. If the person is 6 years out from the date of last activity and has 1 year to go for a clean report, 1) why bother attempting to scrub it now, just wait and 2) if it has been 6 years aren't the SOL for almost all debts expired? Just wondering. . .

To the original point of the thread, the postal service will provide a new address to a company, provided a change of address has been filed, for a small fee. The postal service is a for profit entity now and is happy to do this.

I agree with Christine, best to use a private mailbox rented from one of the many companies.

SOL now critical with new BK laws. Imperative to strategize to help others left behind
