I was recently advised by religious friend that I could not make a relationship decision without first consulting the bible. Possibly because of the religion courses that I took in college, I had something of a different view.

I am reminded by the teachings of my cynical college religion teacher. (I hope that this does get me kicked off by Christine). Religion is arguably just a way for empty people to find meaning. To fill the void. We call it mythology when a religion that we think is silly invents a god to explain where lightning comes from (Zeus or Jupiter), but we call it religion when we zealously invent the same thing for ourselves. Please no car bombs - I'm just paraphrasing a professor.

Maybe marriage serves the same purpose. We feel empty and try to fill it with something. I find that a good meal does the trick for me.

If the problem is that we do not love ourselves enough, why must we find a god or spouse to love us, to prove our worth. A dog would be a cheaper, easier form of unconditional love. We should learn to love ourselves. It is said that we cannot love another until we love ourselves first. And I don't mean that I am typing one-handed.

The older I get, the more true this seems.

Dogs are great. Trouble is they die so fast. And they're not THAT cheap, and sometimes they're even deceptive. Still, I can't imagine life without a dog.

Have you listened to George Carlin lately? I managed to pass out just as the interview started, but fortunately we've got audio archives.

I listened to it way up in the Lincoln National Forest, snow camping, and cooking a real hot green chili gulasch dinner. Next time you got a couple of hours with nothing to do for your ears, check it out.

Scroll down to:
Art interviews George Carlin, comedian. (11/19/99)

J.C.'s extremely funny audio is a little over half way down that page:

"J. C." calls to express his opinion on Women's roles. Art takes calls for JC, as we haven't heard from JC in over a year. (7/14/99)

He was convinced Art's listeners would end up in hell, in a boiling pit of sewage.

Religion is a huge topic. I don't care for imperialistic and violent religions. Oh, and Scientologists.

And it appears to me that organized religion in general is just another tool to keep poor people from either shooting themselves or someone else.

The poorer a country, the more religious the people are. In the States and Western Europe most people worship money more than anything. Until they get seriously ill.

I think it's too bad that kids don't learn how to meditate in school. While technology has evolved tremendously that last century, our brain is still mostly unused. I see no progress, no evolution.

Most people are perfectly content to be at work all day and watch TV at night until they sleep,
or they spend all their time accumulating more stuff. At the mall, E-bay, or E-trade ....

Oh that reminds me, I gotto look for that portable hot tub! :)
