Here is what I was asked in late April 2000 when I called CompuBank to find out which account my Visa debit card is linked to.

ss#
date of birth
zip code
mother's maiden name
drivers license #

After the first 3 questions I stopped answering and requested to be transferred to a supervisor. Julius Keys at first insisted that those 5 questions need to be answered for security.

I advised him that I'll publish an alert about CompuBank because I believe that this practice is extremely risky. For me, that is, not for CompuBank.

As a heavy pay and cell phone user, I have no intention of broadcasting my personal info to the people standing in line behind me or to all those people listening to cell phone conversations on scanners. No way!

Do you ever call your bank from work? If you call CompuBank, be ready for all your co-worker close by to hear your ss#, date of birth, zip code, mother's maiden name and drivers license #.

Do you use a CORDLESS phone? Your neighbors could be listening to your phone conversations.

Do you utilize a BABY MONITOR? Your neighbors could be listening to your phone conversations.

You are primed for identity theft! Having all this info, along with your name, will enable anyone to impersonate you.

Eventually Julian agreed to assign me a pin instead. I was on the phone for 20 minutes to get this accomplished.

The first time I called after that they insisted that I again broadcast ALL ** 5 ** ID questions.

I spoke to Julian and he advised that I need to tell them that they need to look up my account by name and then give them the pin.

It worked the next time.

It didn't work the time after that, had to talk to Julian again. He thinks it'll work from now on.

I can't imagine why CompuBank would require all that info. Aside from the security risk, it's just EXTREMELY annoying and most other places I deal with use a pin #.

"My bank mail to CompuBank:

Please do NOT discuss my account or act on instructions by anyone using my publicly known dob, ss#, mother's maiden name, drivers licence #, or zip code.

Not only have I broadcast this data on the air waves for many years, but it is also PUBLIC RECORD information and available to anyone who wants to know.

Please verify my personal PIN prior to discussing my account."

J.Bradley, Client Services Supervisor, promptly responed:

"Thank you for choosing CompuBank!!

I have placed a note in your online file regarding your request to have us always ask for the PIN to grant access to your account. I have also gone to your link and read all of your articles on security. As security is very important to us and to better protect our clients' personal information as well as assets, I am happy to inform you that we are soon going to be upgrading our 'verification' procedures. I am not at liberty to comment any further at this point on the upgrade, but I can assure you we share your concern about security and are working hard to to resolve this issue. ..."

That's the reason why I bank with CompuBank:

they DO respond, and they try to resolve problems.

After getting nothing but "call your branch" e-mails from Union Bank, I very much appreciate the CompuBank responsiveness and I just applied for my business account at CompuBank.
