I'll start with the best, Vinny with the ebay user ID compuseach@hotmail.com.

He shipped the wrong drive, but I couldn't believe the effort he made to get the right drive to me while I'm on the road.

It was difficult to figure out what to do since I didn't know whether I was going north or south for 2 weeks in Calgary, but I really wanted the drive ASAP and Vinny was going on vacation too.

Not only did he promptly ship the correct drive, but he also sent me a $20 check for my trouble, that's more than what I paid for shipping the wrong drive back.

I didn't have to ask for it either, sounds like I'm dreaming and ready to wake up!

When was the last time somebody I did business with PAID for their mistake?

I can't recall, never?

It's time to post my nightmare on Ebay when I bought my notebook last July.

The short version: Paid with PayPal, funded through my CompuBank Visa Debit card. That's what saved me nearly $1,000.

I thought I'd try the Toshiba "NEW in box with MS Office and $430 CASH rebate."

The lowest web price for that version of MS Office was over $500. The value of the computer was only $999 new at Toshiba, I paid $930.

Got the shipment, there was no CD or license for MS Office, it was installed on the REFURBISHED computer, and the EXPIRED cash rebate was a $400 rebate IF you purchased $900 Compuserve internet access.

The seller had over 80 Ebay transactions and NO negative feedback.

He offered to take the computer back for a refund. I didn't accept, filed an Ebay fraud complaint and asked Ebay for assistance with pressing fraud charges against the guy.

Ebay did absolutely NOTHING. Eventually, while stuck in Calgary, I faxed my dispute to CompuBank.

They promptly issued a provisional credit, subject to Visa's investigation. I presume that by now my dispute has been approved, I never heard.

I really wanted to press charges, but could not figure out how.

-------------------------------------

I stayed away from Ebay, but recently needed a water heater. Found what I thought was a good deal on an instant electric water heater.

AGAINST my policy of ONLY bidding when sellers accept PayPal (so I can dispute) I got the water heater from a guy who only accepted cashiers check or money order. I was so busy, and since he advertised UPS shipping which works good for me I went for it.

When the heater didn't get here last week I finally sent an e-mail asking for the tracking number.

Turns out that the guy charged me $10 shipping, and KNOWING that I really needed that water heater, he shipped POSTAL service ground. I made the 1 hr trip to the post-office and picked it up today, 3 weeks after the auction ended. Shipping was just over $5, he pocketed the rest. Don't know why he didn't ship priority mail, it's a tiny tankless heater and weighs about 2 lbs.

Instead of apologizing, he was as rude and abusive. I was just going to file a fraud complaint with Ebay because he didn't think he did ANYTHING wrong.

BUT, I can't even file a complaint because Ebay now requires a 30 day wait from the time the auction ended.

So, when you read that there is SO little fraud at Ebay, now you know why.

Ebay does ANYTHING possible to discourage complaints.

I really dislike this notion that it's ok to promise one thing and deliver something else, that it's NOT fraud because it's only a few bucks.

Also, the Ebay purchase insurance covers only items between $25 and $200. Again, cheat someone out of $20 and you got nothing to worry about.

It's ok with Ebay, the FTC, the courts, the Attorney Generals .... hey, it's only 20 bucks, don't have a cow, just screw the next guy out of 20 bucks and you're even ... cheat 2 people out of 20 bucks and you're ahead. Do it to thousands of suckers and you can be a millionaire!"

Re. PayPal: They would NOT assist with the dispute over the computer at all, PayPal payments are FINAL. ONLY because I funded the payment with the Visa was I able to dispute.

copy faxed to Ebay corporate inquiries 408-558-7401 because I can't even find an e-mail address for customer service.
