| | Saturday, February 17, 2001 - 11:26 am Only my clients get my direct number. I could publish one of those free virtual numbers (as the fax number) where you can leave a message or I could have the calls forwarded. But what's the point of THAT? We can all waste a lot of time returning each other's calls? Well, I got better things to do, such as answering your e-mails and postings. I could also provide an 800 # to capture YOUR number and then sell it to lists and market the blood out of you, as MOST other corporation and non profits do (my call to non profit debt counselors), but that's just not my thing. There are several reasons why I don't publish my direct phone number: 1) Most important - QUALITY service It is a lot more productive to have phone calls arranged, i.e. expected. I want to give my clients the best advice possible and that of course means that my mind is on THEIR problems not someone elses. A 20 minute phone conversation can uncover problems and sometimes solve problems you didn't even know you had. But in almost all cases, I need to review the credit reports, the completed loan application, the disputed bills, account statements, whatever the problem is, PRIOR to phone contact. 2) I just don't have the time to answer the phone all day. Due to the nature of the BayHouse site (Transamerica) I started to get calls from readers who needed help with lenders, real estate or mortgage companies, readers with all kinds of problems, and even readers who just wanted to tell me that how much they appreciated the BayHouse site. Unfortunately, I just don't have the TIME to talk to everybody who'd like to talk to me. 3) I learned that I have to protect my privacy because law enforcement won't do a thing until AFTER you were physically attacked A few years ago I still had client meetings at my home office. I was under the illusion that I have certain rights and protection from harassment and threats. That changed in early 2000, during the episode with "Robert", after I posted that his advertised services are illegal and that he is a fraud. "Robert" started to harass Kristy Feathers, calling her at home until she got a new unlisted phone number. Law enforcement agencies did NOTHING. I now know that I have to be careful about giving out my phone number, which also gives away my location. There is always a slight chance that some jerk is really going to show up at my door. I don't want to have to wonder about the guy driving real slow by my place, because most likely he's just looking to buy real estate in the neighborhood. I'm not losing any sleep over it now, and I'd like to keep it that way.
