Christine Baker (Admin) | Friday, February 23, 2001 - 11:54 pm There's no need for anyone to read this unless they consider using Discus. I'm mainly hoping I'll remember to read this before I install another upgrade. Earlier this week I found a revision and I decided to install it because I still can't edit my own postings unless I sign into admin (posted the bug at Discus in 10/00, along with several other users.) Since I always do maintenance late night, I was so tired I didn't even notice that ALL the icons and customizations disappeared until the next day. I had no idea everything would be overwritten, but wasn't too worried since I had made a backup before the upgrade. Because there were new postings, I was just going to restore the skin. Well, it wasn't in the backup. I finally found a December version on my drive, so I uploaded that. Unfortunately I had made mods since. Several hours later the skin was what it was before the upgrade. Then I noticed that the DATE was missing the year everywhere. Also overwritten, and it takes several edits in the language.conf. It's a LOONG file, and while Discus features a nice editor, it has no search function. A couple of hours later the dates worked. It takes a long time because after every change you have to regenerate all the pages to see if you MAYBE edited the correct date. Then I noticed that my "no spam" and new account link above the preview button had also disappeared. And I overwrote the blue arrow with their yellow folder. All in all, another 15+ hours down the drain. And I still can't edit my postings without going to admin. Today I noticed a phantom topic, and a couple of postings were missing. About 2 hours later I THINK I fixed it all. Discus isn't all bad, but I can't believe that they can't fix that VERY annoying admin edit bug. It wasn't a problem until October, worked fine all through the betas. And that I lose all the customizations with every service release is just totally ridiculous. It's taking way too much time that I really don't have. |
