Christine Baker (Admin) | Sunday, August 27, 2000 - 07:08 am Those last 10 days in Fairbanks weren't exactly a vacation: The $4,000 check my relative had sent to CompuBank was RETURNED because it is a credit card check. So I'm down to a few hundred dollars in cash. The repairs of the new truck in Calgary were charged AND authorized, so my credit card was maxed out until the authorization dropped off on Thursday. AND, CompuBank decided to close my checking account last Wednesday, for no reason, in error. Fortunately I noticed it right away when I couldn't log on and they reopened it before I had checks bounce. AND, the Fairbanks DMV informed me that I needed the seller's registration and they refused to register my new truck. I finally got the seller to mail me his registration. I hope. AND, since I needed an address up here to get mail, I tried to open a mail box at the Fairbanks Mailbox etc. Learned that due to new 1999 federal regulations Americans now need to rent or purchase real estate to be eligible for a mail box. I just couldn't believe it. I missed the public outcry. Oh, I nearly forgot, nobody gives a damn about the people who live in their cars and campers, if so fortunate to own a vehicle. I guess we're lucky the right to a mailbox is all we lost. If this was Europe in the 30's, we'd be locked up and gassed. AND, on the 22nd BayHouse appears to have suffered the first "denial of service" attack. I'm still waiting for my web host's response to my inquiry. For about 1.5 hours somebody called the FAQ.html about 17 times a second, my error log was nearly 4 mb. I'm looking forward to a few days off-line in the bush. No mail, no phone, no corporation to mess up my life. While I'm sure corporate will continue to screw up, I'll try not to think about it. |
