RA (Wilfire99) | Tuesday, June 27, 2000 - 03:57 pm Does anyone have any opinions on the various legal service plans available today? |
Christine Baker (Admin) | Tuesday, June 27, 2000 - 08:56 pm I tried the Legal Club of America and was not happy. Had been hoping for a directory with all their lawyers' phone/fax/e-mail, but instead you have to call for referrals. They assign you a "personal attorney" much like an HMO. In my case they chose a guy who does only injury law. With all the problems I have, fortunately I haven't been hit by a train lately. So they gave me three more lawyers, one hated E-mail, I met one of the others, was NOT impressed. They offer a lot of VERY low fixed fee services, so what would you expect? I guess you get what you pay for. |
Patrick McGarry (Patr1ck) | Thursday, July 20, 2000 - 02:43 pm My legal plan is a lot like an HMO. It provides lawyers who are competent and do an adequate job. The annual fee ($160) gets me free legal advice by phone, and representation in small matters @ $70/ hour. The plan specifically excludes issues which will take more than 3 days in court, at the lawyer's discretion. My uncle is a 58 year old lawyer who is semi retired, and practices through these types of plans in part. The lawyer who hates e mail is a smart guy- it is a permanent record, can be sent to the wrong person, and may rarely be considered not priviliged. |
Christine Baker (Admin) | Thursday, July 20, 2000 - 04:29 pm What's the name of your plan? As far as E-mail goes, I LIKE permanent records, that's the whole point! I might look at it different if I was accused of murder. But in my case, I'm much more concerned with 1) INSTANT delivery ANYWHERE. Whenever I have E-mail access, I get ALL my messages, no matter where I am. 2) not having to type while I'm talking on the phone (EXTREMELY difficult while on a pay phone.) I'm definitely ready for a memory implant, as soon as it's available. 3) not having the post-office misdeliver. Due to my living on the road full-time, it takes about 30 to 50 days to get my mail when it IS delivered properly. I'm really not at all concerned with misdelivered E-mail, unless it's sent to the opposing party. E-mail is SO MUCH MORE SECURE than a cell phone, pay phone, or cordless phone. If I sent something really confidential, I'd use PGP, which many lawyers used for years already. If it wasn't for E-mail, this site wouldn't be here. There is NO way I'd have time for THIS when I'd have to spend all day and half the night transcribing snail mail into my organizer. |
