I recently received an offer from a firm called Cross Country for an unsecured credit card with a $500.00 limit. I have a bad credit history due to my college days, but am now working for a large firm and will travel. I cannot get the company AMEX due to my past problems. Is this card a good and legit deal? I am not concerned about the interest as it will be used only for business travel and I will be able to pay the balance in full every month. Aldo R.

Yes, Cross country is a well-known firm. The only catch you are likely to run into is a high application and annual fee. Normally the "cost" of the $500.00 credit is $200-$250 in startup fees.

I've always found http://orchardbank.com to have better rates. I've seen pre-selected offers from them at $35.00 application fee, $35.00 annual fee for a $300.00 high-risk card at 18.9% APR (probably higher now due to the changes in the prime rate).

Many have complained about CC. I had two cards with them for several years during my rebuilding process. I always paid on time, never charged more than 50% or so of the limit and, hence, avoided all the problems that most have posted about. As Sean said, they have high app fees, but otherwise are no worse than the other B/C credit card issuers. Providian is about the same, but it took my finding out on my own that they weren't reporting my account to the credit bureaus. They finally did, history and all, after I complained.

My complaint about Cross Country is that I felt that I mailed my payments in plenty of time to be processed before they were considered late (and a hefty late fee was tacked on to my bill, which once caused me to go over my limit - hence, another fee!), yet, several times, they said that they did not receive them on time. This didn't happen with any of my other bills, so I closed my account with them.

Hmm. I'm sure that "things will happen", but I never had an issue. Like I said, though, I read many complaints about CCB. More bad references than good. But if you're rebuilding your credit, you have very few choices.

I travel all the time. Sometimes for 2-3 weeks at time and missing a bill was almost hard to avoid as I live alone in my house. I started rebuilding my credit and received a credit card from Capital One. They have online account services and you may view your current statement, past statements and I can pay my Credit Card statement online via ACH (Check or Savings Transfer). No late fee's now, and I've been ontime ever since. What a great service. If you can find a browser, you can get to your account. When your working hard to clean your CBR, here is a company that provides additional resources to help accomplish it.

Thanks for the board, good advice most of the time.

I also have 2 cards with CC. And I have experienced much of the same type of "late and overlimit fees" they can charge. They do however, have an automated phone pay for $5 if you forget to get your bill in the mail in time to not be late. Also, in addition to high start-up fees, they also charge you a $100 processing fee to raise your credit limit a few hundred dollars. Although this is optional, this offer comes about every six months provided you keep your account in good standing.

Like I said, they're an ok company but I'd rather do business with orchard bank. When I signed up with them I paid $100.00 to get a $300 limit and in six months they bumped my limit up to $600. I closed the account at the 12 month mark because they wouldn't waive the annual fee.

I have a Orchard Bank M/C I am well pleased with them although my credit limit is rather low, but when I needed a credit card they came through.

My question is I received an offer from First Natl Bank of Marin, for a partially secured card only $40.00 upfront fee, the rest is going to be put on he credit card, Should I take this offer? I am trying to reestablish my credit because I have been in bankrupcy almost 2 years now.

I've never had a problem with cross. a good one also is aria you can apply online and if you pay more than the minimum, after 4 months, i got a 1000 increase and the first 3 months are interest free so you can transer credit cards on here. they are at www.aria.com they charge 99.00 for a 1 time line increase and will never charge this fee again and every 4 - 5 months you are reviewed and i have always paid 3x the minium so of course i will always get increases.
