| | Wednesday, December 29, 1999 - 09:44 am Hi. I recently received an updated TU credit report after filing a dispute about inaccurate information. The inaccuracies were removed. At the end of the report under the header "special messages" is this sentence: "****Hawk-Alert: Clear for all searches performed***" I've never seen this before. Does anyone know what it is and what it means? Thanks...

| | Wednesday, December 29, 1999 - 10:18 am Hawk alert is a fraud check indicator. For example if you put, as your residential address, the place that you work it will throw up a hawk alert that your address is non-residential and the name of the business that their records show there (such as Mailboxes, Etc). It will also throw up indications if your social security number is invalid, if you show as dead in their records, or if multiple or different social security numbers appear on your credit profile.

| | Wednesday, December 29, 1999 - 05:16 pm Wordsmith: Credit bureaus love secret codes-- like your credit score and the list of reasons your score is not higher (notice: they are not on your report). They think secrecy adds value to their service to potential creditors. Unfortunately for everybody, the bureaus just end up looking like amateur sleuths with a disproportionate amount of self-importance. It doesn't help their credibility, thus, likewise, largely due to their oligopoly, it doesn't help the credibility of the entire credit system (bureaus, lenders, collectors, government, consumers-- everybody who buys into their nonsense). Is there anything, at all, defining "Hawk Alert" on your credit report or the papers that came with it?

| | Thursday, December 30, 1999 - 01:58 am Sean: The errors on my report are the result of me being confused with somebody that has a similar name (no multiple SSN's however). Would this explain "Hawk Alert?" Is this a "bad" thing to have on a report? I successfully disputed many items with Equifax and Experian that were the result of the same situation, and did not see any "Hawk Alert" on those corrected reports. Greg: Nothing on the report defines "Hawk Alert." However, there is an additional notice, which I did not request, under the heading "Consumer Statement" that says "Do not confuse with consumers of similar identification; verify all identifying information." I am assuming, based on Sean's explanation of Hawk Alert, that this means they have actually recognized that mistakes were made and are trying to prevent them in the future. Of course, that could be a decidedly over-optimstic conclusion. Thanks again...

| | Thursday, December 30, 1999 - 03:32 am Hawk-alerts are a service provided to a subscriber to help them weed out undesirables. Considering that Trans Union does not charge extra for Hawk Alerts and knowing that you get what you pay for, I guess you can figure out how much they are worth (at least in my opinion). These are the Hawk alert codes.

And for the bureau to: "Continue processing the application." I assume the CRA ran a full "Hawk Alert" on you because of your multiple disputes.
