I hope your reason for getting a tax ID is not to create a new credit file because "file segregation" is against the law.

There are a lot of spam messages and other advertisements telling people that it is perfectly legal to set up a tax ID or get a new SSN in order to get a fresh start on credit. Don't believe it!

Forget a Tax ID, get a new identity. More and more nowadays you are not a person, you're a few pieces of paper and some entries in a person's computer database. Take advantage of the situation by learning how to take a Paper Trip to a new identity.

Is any of this legal? Should you divorce or file bankruptcy before abruptly disappearing under the cover of your new identity? Ask an attorney about the legal pitfalls and the best decisions to make to keep you on the straight-and-narrow and safely out of Big Brother's clutches.

Getting a new identity (which means getting a new SSN, etc) to avoid your past credit problems is illegal, I wouldn't do this.
