| | Saturday, February 19, 2000 - 05:48 pm If you like a new SSN# to get away from your credit problems all you need to do is change your name in the court and take the court order to the SSN Office they will take your old number and give you a new one in your new name they will not turn you down with a court order.

| | Saturday, February 19, 2000 - 09:08 pm This is illegal. It's no different from the tax id scam that people were advocating a while back.
|
| | Sunday, February 20, 2000 - 12:25 am No its not. It is legal.
|
| | Sunday, February 20, 2000 - 10:27 am Your Experian credit file records the date that your SS# was issued. I'd say getting a new number would raise red flags. The only way I know to get a new SS# is to enter the witness protection program. There are easier ways to deal with your credit problems. Phil

| | Sunday, February 20, 2000 - 01:54 pm The credit bureaus can not get the date the number was issued. The Social Security Office will confirm the number and person it is listed to if you give the SSN Office the person name and number the SSN Office reply yes it belongs to that subject or it does not match.Don't let the bureaus tell you they have access to the SSA.They {bureaus} do not have enough money to get out of the trouble the SSA will cause them. To get above info you need Mothers Madian name or going to hire the subject which you will need to give the SSA office you tax id number. At any given time you can call the SSA to see if someone has requested info on you they will give you that info and who ask for it.

| | Sunday, February 20, 2000 - 08:33 pm To the Anon who insists it is legal to change one's name and get a new SSN simply to erase bad credit-- Ask the FTC. This is just one of several types of file segregation and it IS illegal. (What do you think "file segregation" means?) Any strategy to get a new credit file for the purpose of concealing a bad credit history is illegal (it is fraud).

| | Monday, February 21, 2000 - 04:04 am Anonymous - you will need to give the SSA office you tax id number Your SS# is your tax(payer) ID number, unless you've specifically applied separately for a TIN.
|
| | Monday, February 21, 2000 - 05:36 am Anon- You can go to certain web sites and input your SS# and it will tell you the year it was issued. CRA's (Experian) do report the date and do have access to this info. My Experian file lists my SS# (issue) as between 1974 and 1975. I would again ask the original poster to consider what he or she is really risking. Post your credit problems/questions and lets see how bad things are and what can be done. Also, the use of a TIN in place of SS# is to the best of my knowledge illegal. Phil

| | Monday, February 21, 2000 - 12:46 pm I am being stalked by an ex-spouse. Although we have been to court and a judge has told him to stay away from me, I know that he is still trying to locate me. He has called relatives repeatedly and former employers. I found out recently that anyone with my SSN# and date of birth can obtain "header info" from the three credit bureaus. Can I control the release of this information? I have heard the header contains your current and previous addresses, but no financial data. What legal rights does an individual have regarding the release of this information? If I have no control, I will have to lead a "financial invisible life" until my ex is jailed, or leaves me alone. Thank you for any responses.

| | Monday, February 21, 2000 - 02:49 pm I know nothing about this issue, but I am certain that I remember reading a post several months ago that dealt with exactly this. You might try the search feature.

| | Monday, February 21, 2000 - 03:52 pm Here's another option. BE WARNED: This CAN hurt your credit rating, but it worked for my exwife who was being stalked. What we did was get an MBE (Mail Box's Etc.) box, and used it on EVERYTHING as our "REAL" address, including Voter Registration and Drivers Licenses. To be double sure, Get one on one side of town, and use it as the address to open the second one. Then close the first one, and MOVE. You have just become untraceable to the casual uninformed stalker. Be sure all bills (like cable, utilities, etc) understand that you have ONE address for service and another for billing purposes. My understanding is, the big three do check these address's and flag that it is not a real address, making it harder for you to get real credit. However, you must ask yourself: Credit, or safety? Which is more important right now?

| | Monday, February 21, 2000 - 06:54 pm Ok, first of all getting an account with Mail Boxes, Etc. was once a good idea, but with the change in postal regulations now anyone can find out your real address from the post office with a Freedom of Information Act request. Also the post office will no longer deliver to Mail Boxes, Etc. if you put your address down as Suite, #, Apt or anything like that. Now you must use PMB which makes it a dead giveaway that you are using a mail forwarder. A much better bet is to find someone who already has a PO Box that is moving and pay them some green stuff to let you take over their box. Then go to a house somewhere, write down the address and file a change of address form with the post office. Tell everyone that address is yours and your mail will be automagically forwarded from your "street address" to "your" PO Box for 6 months. Repeat as often as necessary by "moving" every 5 months. Places like DocuSearch have access to databases like the water, electric and phone company records. Maybe you can convince all your creditors that you live at Mail Boxes, Etc. but it's much harder to convince your water provider that they're delivering your water there. If someone wants to find you that badly you'll need to change your name, your birthdate, your social security number and your address and not let anyone (not even Mom) know where you are. Dying can also help you avoid being found. If you are a victim of domestic abuse or violence you can just go to the social security office and they will walk you through the necessary forms to obtain a new social security number. There are a number of legal ways to get a new social security number, or even a new identity. If you really need to get away from creditors you should try being reborn. If you need to do it legally you should try listening to an attorney and if you really, I mean, really need to get permanantly lost try quitting society altogether or being Canadian. It is not that uncommon for people to get social security numbers late in life. Perhaps a housewife never needed a social security number until after her husband died and she had to enter the workforce. Perhaps you're 37 and just got out of a 20-year sentance for a murder conviction at age 17. Maybe you were born Amish and decided it wasn't for you just last month (you'd need to get a birth certificate too). The best tip is to go right on the first business day of the month. The social security people will be so swamped with all the old people looking for their checks they won't have time to get curious and ask uncomfortable questions.

| | Monday, February 21, 2000 - 07:13 pm It's great to see you back Sean!!!!
|
| | Tuesday, February 22, 2000 - 07:27 am FYI Sean - The Post Office has rescinded (for now) that policy of having to put POB on your address if it is a "Mail Drop" - also, regarding Post Offices giving your permanent Address out - only if it is a business box. Also, you can talk with the postmaster at the Post Office where you have their box - there is a policy (a form perhaps?) if you are a vicitm of stalking/abuse.

| | Tuesday, February 22, 2000 - 07:57 am If you change your name the SS Office say you can get a new number that is your rights under the law.I sent the below info view fax to the FTC To the Anon who insists it is legal to change one's name and get a new SSN simply to erase bad credit-- Ask the FTC. This is just one of several types of file segregation and it IS illegal. (What do you think "file segregation" means?) Any strategy to get a new credit file for the purpose of concealing a bad credit history is illegal (it is fraud). I follow up with a phone call i spoke to a Mr Harding at FTC about the name change law his words was a new name a new number i respond by saying what about all the people you owe under your old number Mr Harding said the law is written very clear. He did say getting a EIN number in place of a SSN# we will come down hard on them. Mr Harding did say they are looking into the big THREE for seeking info about people from the SSA under false pretense. If you call the SSA office and ask them who has got info about you they will tell you who name, address, phone # if you tell the SSA you do not no the people they will fax over a form for you to fill out there is a heavy fine and jail time to ask for or get info on anyone with the SSA. If someone is going to hire you they can get the info with their TAX ID# Lawenforcement with a court order can get it. The person that the number was issue to can get that info must provide a mothers maiden name and number. If the credit bureaus get your info under false pretense you can sue and the SSA will be in your corner.

| | Tuesday, February 22, 2000 - 02:25 pm I've had no difficulty geting my mail at MBE and I've used them for years. The problem the Post Office has with MBE and outfits like it, is that it's competition. Many things taken care of at MBE are done so with FedEx or another carrier - the Post Office hates competition.
