In an effort to stop "file segregation" the Federal Trade Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice charged sixteen defendants with selling advice and products that violate federal law. The defendants have agreed to settle the charges by providing consumer redress for their vicims, stopping future violations of the Credit Repair Organizations Act, halting misleading claims about the legality of file segreation, and notifying the victims of the illegal nature of their products. For more information go to the FTC's Web site at www.ftc.gov/opa/1999/9910/badidea.htm

I'd like to point out, though, that there is a legal method of "file segregation" available. Unfortunately it only applies to women.

A recent law championed by Al Gore permits women with abusive ex-husbands or ex-boyfriends to contact the Social Security Administration and receive a new social security number that will not be linked to the old one in any way. One should not think it's an open-and-shut procedure, though. Many times police reports are required although I did manage to get a young lady a second social security number through this method without a police report instead using notarized jurats from credible witnesses.

Women who have experienced credit upheaval due in part to hostile divorce proceedings might want to check and see if they qualify for this program. Contact social security and tell them you have an abusive ex-husband and you heard about a new program that will permit you to change your social security number. The new program no longer requires you to prove that your ex-mate misused your social security number. Police reports are very helpful, if you have any.

Where do you get this weird information, Sean? Anyone can get a new file, but only in the case of fraud, or witness protection, etc. It certainly isn't exclusive to women. And file segregation for the purposes of "getting rid" of your old credit file is totally illegal.

Where do I get this weird information? Well, I first heard about the possibility from a book called "Paper Trip III" which is availble for purchase from http://www.paladin-press.com/ and at the time I didn't think anything of it, because I'm not a woman and I don't have an abusive ex-boyfriend.

However, later I did find a need for that information and I must admit it worked out pretty well.
