Since there are so many ANONYMOUS posters, wouldn't it be OK for these folks to just use a "handle" or pseudonymn so that we can all know who is who? IT's hard to ask questions of or have a dialogue with someone if you don't know which ANONYMOUS your reading.

It seems that anonymity is preserved in this way. I would never want to impose such a rule, but perhaps Christine could suggest it in the "Add a Message" form?

Yes. Are people just too lazy? I don't know ...

Unfortunately I can't MAKE people use a name, unless I disable anonymous posting entirely and then people have to go through the registration process.

I haven't done this just because a lot of people are new to computers and the net, but there may be no way around it.

I'm currently awaiting the final release of Discus and then I'll see what the options are.

They may not realize they can have a name, but not list their email address (by using "*@*" (http://www.bayhouse.com/forum-help.html)).

Some possible names: "Spike," "Darth," "Buzz," "Schlepenheimer."

Good suggestion. I have often posted anonymously due to the delicate and sometimes personal info that we share with each other. I will start using a "handle".

As a follow-on, we all know that a technical and dedicated computer dude(tte) can pull information from these systems that we presume to be hard to get.

I suppose that regardless of how anonymous we think we are, we are always at some modicum of risk. But when you think of the laypeople who visit sites such as this, it seems that it is beyond the skills and, indeed, the inclination of most visitors, to go through the trouble and effort to "discover" someone's secret identity. Reasonably, Christine can, I think, track an an IP address, but only when something is foul.

For the most part, I think that anyone's assumption of an alias (without an email address, per Greg's instructions) will suffice to afford a decent layer of conversational privacy....and of course, for those who just don't trust things, there is still the good ol' ANONYMOUS identity.

Have to add here that I also get the IP numbers of ANONYMOUS posters. I could have the numbers displayed on the postings, but chose not to.

That doesn't mean a hacker couldn't get that info. I have no idea why anyone would go through that effort.

To be truly anonymous, people should post from libraries, schools, or other public places.

And be sure to wear a wig and hat or some other disguises so nobody recognizes you while you post!

The FBI or a court order won't get the identities?

That depends on a lot of things, but in general I'd say that just signing up to use anonymizer.com certainly wouldn't be sufficient to defeat a government official determined to find out who you are. So don't go using this resource to send threats to Bill Clinton falsely believing that you are safe from any repercussions.

There used to be a website called http://www.spycounterspy.com/ that specifically talked about how the FBI works, how to thwart them and some of the common pitfalls most people run into when dealing with them. They even broke down the FBI's code words as to what they meant. The webmaster thought that because he was in Canada he was beyond the reach of the FBI's power but the site suddenly went offline awhile ago and didn't come back up.

The largest barrier to people posting with a handle is Christine. I'm sorry, there just isn't a nice way to say that. If you stopped this crusade to disenfranchise everyone who doesn't share your views, you'd have a much better site. I'd MUCH rather post as myself than as anonymous, but since you've banned others from posting, there is no way I can do this. Why, I even suspect that some of the banned posters still post as anonymous, and contribute to this site despite your short sightedness.
