bijan farasat (Bfarasat) | Thursday, April 20, 2000 - 07:27 am I think I might be able to convince one of my old creditors to take the bad notation off my credit report (yeah!). on the other hand, I don't know how to do this to make sure that they honor it. do I send kind of "settlement agreement" form to them, or do I just send them a letter confirming our agreement (which it seems they could still dispute later). also should I get the original creditor and the collection agency to sign the same agreement? different agreements? (the collection agency is a "subsidiary" of the original creditor) |
Morgan Appel (Downinsocal) | Thursday, April 20, 2000 - 08:43 am Great job! Just make sure you get it in writing. Believe it or not, some collection agencies will make promises on the phone and claim that they did not later ;). I would say that you should get the original creditor to sign the agreement, because they have the power to delete your account or change its status. Just my .02. |
Christine Baker (Admin) | Thursday, April 20, 2000 - 12:01 pm Yeah I agree, definitely get it in writing. But I guess that only the people that you actually PAY would agree to anything, the others don't have to. I used to have the collection agencies fax the "settlement agreement." It should state which debt you are paying, the dollar amount to settle the debt, and that they will remove the entry from the credit bureaus. They will add a due date and often accept only money orders or cashier's checks. Morgan, we need more humor! Didn't have a chance to respond to you earlier, always much appreciate a laugh. Thanks for your postings. |
