Very good information Christine. In reference to your statement " a collection last month lowers your Score much more than a collection 5 years ago (provided the correct date is reported on the credit report by the collection agency.) ", what date is used in calculating the score? Is it the date that the collection was reported to the credit bureau or the date that the colloection was paid. I have a collection that was reported in 1996 but was paid in January 2000.

Since it makes no difference for Credit Scoring whether the collection is paid or not, I'd say it's save to assume that they look only at the date the collection was reported.

Make sure that PAYING the collection didn't change the date to 1/00!
