Hi, I have a charge-off that's about a year and a half old from a visa credit card that I got as a student. I was unemployed and unable at the time to make payments and it became a charge-off. I'm now trying to get an apartment but get denied because of the charge-off. I don't know what to do, i'm only 21yrs. old and I need a place to live; to survive. I need help! Is there anything I can do to erase or make payments to delete the charge-off without having to wait seven long years? How will I live and survive? Please help.

Well, first off, not everyone will deny you a place to live because of a charge off - find another apartment is #1, or get a cosigner (Mom? Dad?) and see if they get you in that way. Second, you can TRY to negotiate with visa, but good luck. I haven't had much luck there. If you tell them you have to have this removed, you loose all leverage. If you make a payment of any sort without an agreement in writing, on thier letterhead, signed by a company officer, you're out of luck. How old is the debt? What state? What's the statute of limmitations in that state on written contracts? Some states it's as low as 4 years. I'm confused: How old were you when you entered into this agreement? You seem a little young to have a charge off. Lastly, have you considered offering a partial settlement? Basically, it works like this: You need to offer them something, see if they take it. Get an agreement from them that they will NOT discuss this with any third party, IN WRITTING! Pay off the agreed amount, then dispute the debt with the credit reporting agencies. The NDA you had them sign prevents them from disclosing anything about the debt to the CRA, and thus it cannot be verified - it then goes away. Good luck!

>> You seem a little young to have a charge off.

You only need to:

(1) be 18 to sign a legally binding contract
(2) charge on the credit card
(3) don't make any payments
(4) wait 6-9 months.

You'll then be 18 with a charge off. I'm sure that there are MILLIONS of college students with charge-offs ...
