I would like to have my credit "fixed" by removing old and incorrect items on my credit files. I have had a bankruptcy discharged in '94, however several accounts still show as currently derogatory.I have some other negative items as well. I know that I could do this myself, however I would like to pay someone with more experience. I have found the following groups and would like some feed back:
Fowler and Fowler
Lexington
Carreon and Associates
J.A. Mason and Associates

Paul:

This decision is important. Consider this:
Lexington charges per month so what if it takes your case 20 months?.($2000.00)

Law offices are more expensive and charge retainer fees sometimes.

We charge per derog period! so if it takes us 20 months then you don't pay for that, besides you should really read our section under self help and www.carreonandassociates.com/dothis.htm
It will tell you exactly how to do it yourself no strings attached.

If you have 6 derog's you pay one time for each derog. But I can't stress enough, you can be pretty successful if you follow our free guide in doing it yourself.

Our commitment is one thing, Consumer awareness and satisfaction. We only want you if you absolutely don't want to do it yourself or have tried it and were unsuccesful. Not all consumers know the steps to take and thats fine. But if you do, then go for it. When searching for a good reputable company go for Debt negotiation and credit resolution firms or attorney's. Credit Repair companies from mine and my clients experience stink! They usually are a rip off.

Good Luck and feel free to print out our material and use it yourself!.

I've met Jack Schrold and as attorneys go, he's one of the more ethical ones. But you are correct that you could do this yourself.

I recently bought a package that explained to me how to start myself a new credit file. I have had no problems with my new credit file. Just as you have seen advertise I have a new and clean credit record and since then I have made the right decisions and have began building good credit! Instead of getting mail from collectors, I am getting junk mail from credit card companies with "pre-approved" credit limits ranging from $2500-$15,000!! I never thought that I would be so excited to get junk mail! I think I am going to enjoy this. :) BTW if anyone wants to know the site where I got mt kit at, here it is. I did some major checking around before I bought mine and this place offers the most RELEVENT information for the best price. (other places try to include alot of crap with their kit to try and make it seem better I guess) here it is - http://newcredit.itgo.com

How did you start a new credit file, by getting a new SSN or tax ID number? File segregation? There may be some serious problems with that if you went that route.

I have decided to start to clean up my credit myself. If I can't pull it off over the next 4 to 6 months, I may then decide to use a "credit repair" company.
I don't want to create a new file, just clean mine up to the best I can legally.
I think you can only get a new SSN or use the tax id for credit if you were either 1) an abused spouse or 2) fraud was committed on your SSN, any other use to attain a better credit rating would be considered fraud on your part.

Paul, I started out on my own to clean up my credit and did a lot of the initial work myself, but found that after 2 months I was spending a lot more time than I either had or wanted to doing dispute letters, trying to get things removed. I was using every free minute at work and at home until 10 or 11 each night working on various aspects of a problem. Also, I must be very emotional about this stuff as I would get really upset when I would get a response opposite to what the truth was. Anyway, to make a long story short, I hired a credit repair company, Lexington in my case, and they are doing a great job of removing the rest of the stuff. I think because I had done all of the basic stuff, such as paying off all of the old collections and gotten as much back-up as possible to the credit bureaus, it is just a matter of disputing this stuff over and over which is what the credit repair companies do. Whatever you decide to do, good luck. It's worth all the work.

voig - If I do the following: 1) get a fed tax id #, 2) apply for a credit card using that # instead of my ss #, 3) get the credit card, use it, and pay the bill promptly, exactly WHERE have I broken the law?

The Federal Trade Commission article is dated January, 1999. It says "you could face fines or even a prison sentence." I don't know how to cut and paste the address, but it reads:
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/credit/creditid.htm

I see what you are saying, that since you intend to pay on time then there is no criminal intent, and if you actually do pay, then there are no damages. But since it is hard to measure intent, and the law enforcement entities cannot afford to wait and see whether you actually do harm, the laws are normally set up to avoid even the potential for harm.

Perhaps a silly example: if I intend to steal from the rich and give to the poor, and actually do so, can the law afford to let my actions play out when I rob the Sherwood 7-11? OK it's a bad example as well as a silly one. I just like Errol Flynn. I think that my point was that the crime occurred in misrepresenting to the creditor that you had no debts, and in inducing them to grant you credit based on that misrepresentation.

I've never researched why it is illegal. I am as curious as I am lazy on this issue.
