Are the inquiries made by those companies that send those "Preapproved" credit cards detrimental to you on your credit report even if you're not authorizing or requesting those inquires to be made?

I just don't see it as fair for them to be held against you in the "Too many recent inquiries" section of a report.

There are two main types of inquiries in the world. Consumer-initiated and non-consumer-initiated.

When you apply for a credit card, job or fill out a rental application many times you are initiating an inquiry. However there are many more inquiries that are not initiated by you.

Promotional (pre-selected) inquiries and account review inquiries are the two common non-consumer-initiated inquiries. Not only do these inquiries not count against you on your score but other creditors that receive your credit won't get a list of these inquiries. On promotional inquiries no inquiry information at all is given to the potential creditor in accordance with various clauses in the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
