Rhonda (Rhonda) | Tuesday, September 26, 2000 - 01:08 pm Interesting news here in Michigan that I thought others might be interested in. Here's the story: A consumer learned in July 1996 that a friend of her ex-husband had opened an account with Ameritech using her name. She contacted Ameritech and they assured her that she would not be responsible for the account and they would remove it from her credit report. She later learned that the account had not been removed when she was denied both credit and employment. She filed a complaint with the Michigan Public Service Commission, the agency that regulates Ameritech in Michigan. They just awarded her $2825 in restitution and fined Ameritech an additional $1.5 million. They also ordered Ameritech to file procedure changes in how they handle identity fraud complaints. Score one for us little guys! |
