Ok I read someone else's post here about WorthKnowing.com and I ran right over there to check it out. WOW! It was free so I tried it out.

They ran my credit, gave me a score and gave me some 'helpful pointers' on how to improve my score. Their pointer: That since I had 7 revolving accounts that might be hurting me because 7 might be too many.

Worthless advise! Sure I have 7 revolving accounts -- three open and four closed. When last I checked three open accounts was not excessive.

It rates me a score of 53 out of 100 and said that with such a score between 40 and 60 that I should qualify for credit cards from 12.9-18.9% with $0-$50 annual fees and receive credit lines of $1000-$3000.

They then handily supplied me with the names of credit grantors that should issue me credit. They invited me to apply with them and I did, but was told by their online approval matrix that "they could not approve my decision online" and that I would have their decision in 7-10 working days.

That obviously means that I didn't score high enough and that they're likely to turn me down. What a waste of time.

Too bad. It really would be nice to have a site that will run your credit and then shop for you, avoiding multiple inquiries and giving you the opportunity to have 10 or 20 approvals and just pick the one with the terms you like.

While "on vaction" in Fairbanks I looked at a bunch of sites and I have yet to find anything that's really useful.

They all provide some "content" (as recommended and sometimes provided on the merchant affiliate pages) and the only goal is to get as many commissions as possible.

Good news: Getting their free Trans Union reports does NOT hurt your Credit Scores.

"When you request a copy of your credit report either directly from the credit bureau or through a certified third party such as WorthKnowing, it is considered a ‘consumer’ inquiry. You may request a copy of your credit report as many times as you like with no damaging effects to your credit rating."

But then it didn't take much time to find this under Credit Resources:

"Credit Counseling

Consumer Credit Counseling Services (CCCS) is a nationwide nonprofit service that offers free and confidential budget, credit, and housing counseling plus debt repayment plans. CCCS has been in business for more than 30 years helping people pay their bills."

You can access CCCS through their online counseling service, or call 1-800- (full number deleted by me because I sure won't advertise the CCCS on MY site) any day of the week and schedule a telephone or in-person counseling session. CCCS will review your finances and help you create a plan to achieve your financial goals."

I wouldn't expect them to list BayHouse on their "Credit Resources" page as I'm (reluctantly) competing for the ad click through commissions, but those blatant deceptive ads for the CCCS really bother me.

Based on Shylock's experience and that misleading advertisement for the CCCS, I recommend that people get their free credit report, but disregard EVERYTHING else on that site.

Be careful out there, it's a jungle!

Try Kathryn Petralia (kpetralia@mindspring.com). That was the email address that notified me that "WorthKnowing.com has launched".

Kathryn already responded and explained WHY the CCCS is regarded so highly and why they advertise their services free of charge.

"I'm not sure where you live, but in Atlanta CCCS is regarded by consumer advocates as the best place for consumers with credit trouble to turn. If you go to http://www.clarkhoward.com (he is our local consumer guru and his radio program is syndicated in nearly every state) he references CCCS as well and often refers consumers who call in to his show to CCCS.

If you have negative information about CCCS we would certainly like to know about it. To the best of our knowledge they are a reputable, non-profit organization."

Well, I have been publishing my experiences with the CCCS at least since 1995 and the Transamerica dispute. I *believe* it was the San Francisco Chronicle who did a huge expose on the CCCS, many years ago. They wrote about their fake consultations and I think that's where I first learned that they are financed by the finance industry.

But the finance gurus don't pick that up. And neither did Worthknowing.com.

I'd like to leave the CCCS discussion THERE and limit this topic to other Worthknowing.com issues.

Kathryn didn't respond to Shylock's posting at all, so she probably hadn't read it.

I invited her to read and post here, I'm obviously NOT forwarding any more postings to her. It's a one-time courtesy, and then it's up to them to read here, or to activate the E-mail subscription.

It's obvious they're very busy marketing, and that's all so many sites do. No time for substance. That's why many merchants offer "content" to their affiliates.

I went to worthknowing.com and my score was a 5! I couldn't believe it. I am in the process of rebuilding my credit so my credit is not perfect by any means but I know my fico scores (in the process of applying for a mortgage) and they range from the low 600s to the high 600s. I don't think worthknowing.com takes enough into consideration. In the section where it gives you feedback all that it said was I had too many revolving accts. I have 5 credit cards and they are all in good standing. I think if people go here to see their transunion report that is one thing but I wouldn't rely too heavily on anything else they say. (It basically said I couldn't get any unsecured credit cards which is not true).
