Christine Baker (Admin) | Friday, October 13, 2000 - 04:22 pm Last night I heard a radio commercial for this "non profit credit counseling organization." In search for something better than the CCCS, I called the 800 number. I could immediately tell I reached a boiler room. The girl sounded like a high school kid. I gave her my zip code as she requested and I asked who I was calling. A marketing firm, she explained, and I told her I wanted to know about the debt counseling. I confirmed that I had over $2,000 in outstanding unsecured debt and then she wanted DETAILS about my debts. I wondered what the point of that was, since SHE obviously couldn't help me. She told me they'd send some material, and I figured why not. I offered my address for the materials, but unfortunately she couldn't send anything without the details on my bills. So she gave me a 301-515-1500 number to call them direct. Next she wanted my address again! I asked her why, since she wasn't going to send anything, "well they want us to capture that." I called the number she gave me, went through some VM, was informed that their new number is 301-515-7000. More voicemail hell. A number of options to report payments, etc. including "Please be advised that you will not be able to reach a counselor at this number" and obviously they were closed now anyway. Has anyone used this outfit? Based on MY experience, I sure recommend against it. And I'm REALLY sick of all those fake non profits. EVERY non profit should have to publish all their finances, including every corporate donation and the salaries and names of EVERY employee and vendor. Most non profits are scams and about as non profit as Microsoft. |
