Let me start with some back round. I have a Charge-off from Fleet/Northwestern with a last activity date of 12/96. And of course this account was handed to a collection agency (don't know if they own it or acting on behalf of). I am in negotiations with the collection agency (payment for a nondisclosure clause). Here is my question, under the assumption I get my nondisclosure, if the agent owns it I challenge it later and then its off my report, CORRECT? While the charge off falls off 7-years from 12/96. But what if Fleets owns the account and the agent is acting on their behalf. Am I to ask for a nondisclosure from BOTH the collection agent and Fleet. Opinon/Advise Please Thanks P.S. How do I find out who owns the debt?

The easiest way to find out who owns the debt is to talk directly with the original company or entity you owed the money to.

If they'll speak to you about you paying then they still own the debt. If they immediately refer you to another company then they have sold the debt.
