| | Thursday, December 09, 1999 - 02:07 pm Ok I know I was asked this before, now I have the answer (see http://www.cardweb.com/cardtrak/news/1999/november/23b.html). It is not necessary to have a credit check done in order to enjoy the convenience of a credit card and credit card purchases can be done in complete anonymity. "...for everything else, there's MasterCard."

| | Sunday, December 12, 1999 - 11:03 am I appreciate the effort, Sean. http://www.cardweb.com/cardtrak/news/1999/november/23b.html sounded good. Unfortunately, as so many times these days, it's not at all what it appears to be. It's some kind of "incentive program" for employees and customers. The link on the page to http://swiftgiftcard.com/ is Digital Visions, some kind of marketing firm. I kept being moved to http://www.digivis.com/clients/clients_frame.html and couldn't find anything on credit cards. The link to cardex.com eventually got me this: "Q. What does CardEx do? A. CardEx Incentives, is a division of Card Express, Inc., specializes in full-service incentive programs using GiftCards and IncentiveCards. We provide customized solutions to the motivational and incentive needs of large, nationwide clients." More marketing for "large, nationwide clients." I'm not exactly browsing at the speed of light while on the road. If it actually exists, maybe somebody can post the URL for a page where Joe Blow can buy a prepaid Visa/MC. Thanks, Christine

| | Monday, January 10, 2000 - 03:02 pm WOW! Talk about excessive fees! This card is NOT a credit card, it's a money making scam. This is like the old calling cards, EXTREMELY expensive. Yet, unlike calling cards, this Swift Gift Card is barely useable. From http://www.swiftgiftcard.com/Home_Page/FAQ/faq.html "Does the Swift Gift card expire? Yes, it expires three months after being issued. The expiration date is clearly embossed on the front of the card. After its expiration date, the card and remaining balance, if any, will not be honored." There's a NICE profit margin! "Can more money be added to the gift card? No. The card's denomination appears on the front of the card. It cannot be replenished." The Swift Card features a $100 maximum??? "What do I do if my gift card is lost or stolen? Call 847-433-1100 immediately. Remember that the card is really money and should be treated as such. If it is lost prior to use, a new card will be reissued. An additional service fee will be charged to reissue." This card is DANGEROUS! I can't even think of a usefull purpose. You can't use it to pay an ISP for more than 3 months (if at all), you can't use it to rent a car, so why bother having it????????? I guess internet/phone/mail orders up to $100 couldn't be made with cash. Other than that, I cannot think of any reason to buy that card. Hopefully competition will appear and we'll see this go the way of prepaid cellular and phone cards. My MCI prepaid calling card is down to 8.5 c/min and only 2 units for the pay phone connect fee. Any REAL prepaid credit cards anywhere?
