| | Friday, January 07, 2000 - 08:16 am I have about 3 charge offs and some other credit card accounts that are in terrible shape. I haven't paid anything on these accounts for almost 2 years now. I am now financially ready to start repairing my problem. Would the best solution be to go to a non-profit org [CCCS] or to try to do my own negotiating and settling? Or perhaps another solution that I haven't thought about?

| | Friday, January 07, 2000 - 09:36 am I'd try negotiating on your own first. Here's our little article on how to do it. http://www.creditinfocenter.com/rebuild/settle_debts.shtml

| | Saturday, January 08, 2000 - 09:06 pm The CCCS is financed by the creditors. Avoid the CCCS like the pest. Just because they are a non-profit, doesn't mean they work in your interest. Their only goal is to keep you from discharging the debts through bankruptcy. Additionally, chances are that your credit will be WORSE than it is now if you go on a CCCS payment plan. If you do decide to negotiate on your own behalf, do NOT call from your work/home phone. Caller ID disabling does NOT work for 800 numbers.

| | Saturday, January 08, 2000 - 09:16 pm CCS Takes a cut from every payment. As mentioned above they represent the creditors. Avoid them at all costs. If a collection agency is bugging you, send them a cease and desist letter. Below is a sample letter. http://www.creditmania.com/Letters/cease.htm

| | Monday, January 10, 2000 - 04:51 am Christine Baker, Is it safe to negotiate from a home phone with a private, non-published phone #? Thanks,
|
| | Monday, January 10, 2000 - 06:11 am I should just point out that if you call an (800) number from your home the company you call automatically gets your phone number, regardless of caller ID blocking or any other blocking circutry that you may have.

| | Monday, January 10, 2000 - 07:53 am Christine is 100% right. If at all possible, avoid these guys. Also, they don't negotiate debts other than credit cards in most cases because this is not their focus.

| | Monday, January 10, 2000 - 11:04 am re 800#s: The weird thing is that the only people who seem to know that are marketers. I once had an 800# and I found out when I got these reports about every call made. Recently I had to open an AOL account for a few weeks and they know what # you call from while you're talking to them. Just like 911.

|
| | Wednesday, January 12, 2000 - 04:48 pm How fast and far can you run? Just kidding. Unless the creditors are getting judgments, you don't have to run at all. Look through the many postings on judgments and charge-offs.

| | Thursday, January 13, 2000 - 08:32 pm My wife and I were told by the company Consumer Education Services that if we did the consolidation process that it couldn't hurt our credit in any way. I later found out, while trying to purchase an auto loan that the letters "CCCS" appear at the top of our report. I was told that this alone can lower my score by up to 20 points. I do not know if this is true, but... how else can this service hurt? If it is so bad, should I try to get out of it? If I should, how do I go about it? Currently our credit consists of I1's and R1's, however this was not recently the case and our score is just below 600. I just do not know what to do! Help!!!
