I was recently turned down for a credit card. The company sent back a standard form letter with the reasons for the denial.

One reason stated was numerous delinquencies listed on my Experian cr. Now this seemed odd. Although there were derogatories, i.e. an 8 year old bk and a 4 year old paid on collection, there were no delinquencies. The 25 month history was clean of 30,60,90, and greater then 90 days late payments.

After careful study, I found a line in the cr that read "CNT 00/00/00/04". After checking the key to the report, I discovered that this is a summary of 30,60,90, and greater then 90 days deliq., WHETHER OR NOT THE DELIQ. APPEAR IN THE 25 MONTH HISTORY.

So effectively, if understand correctly, no matter how clean I have been, for how long, there will still be an record, reaching back who knows how long, of past indiscretions.

Is anyone aware of this neat little trick and if there is a way to fix it?

Where in the Experian report did you locate that notation? I just looked through 14 pages of my most recent and the 20 pages of my SO's most recent report from Experian and did not find any similar entries to what you describe.

Yeah those notations occur on the credit report summary that a creditor will see when they view your file. Normally entries go back further than the 25-month window, though. Experian usually shows a (99) as the number of months reviewed and will show in a 00/00/00/00 format the number of times 30/60/90/worse days late.

Usually the individual items will say "CURR WAS 120" or whatever for 7 years before it goes to a notation of "CURRENT."

That's correct, Shylock, the entry appears on the first line of the summary.

The entry, "CNT 00/00/00/04", means 4 occurrences of delinquencies greater than 90 days. However this refers to lates occuring MORE THAN 8 YEARS AGO because I did not have deliquencies that late since I filed for the bk, which was in 1992. Any ideas on how, if possible, to repair that entry? And, by the way, under the fcra can they carry information from that far back?

You MUST have accounts on your Experian report with incorrect DATES.

Derogatory information can stay on your credit profile for 7 years, with the exception of chapter 7 bankruptcy which can stay for 10 years.

I can only assume that either the dates are wrong, as Christine has said; that the serious delinquencies mentioned are on files marked as included in bankruptcy that are surviving past the 7-year mark; that you're misreading your file and not finding the derogatory marks; or that Experian's file just plain contradicts itself.

I suggest you start by contacting Experian directly and telling them that you don't understand your credit profile. Legally they must present your file to you in a manner that you can understand. Go from there.
