For the past 18 mos I have been living with my parents to save money for a home. I requested a copy of my trans union report and I would like to clear up the 2 collections and the 3 charge-offs before I go shopping for a home loan. Also, is there anyway I can negotiate to clear up lates on a loan? I took out a personal loan and was late a couple of times they took me to court even though my payments where current, they kept asking for extensions (I guess to wait to see if I would miss a payment) When they requested the 3rd extension the judge dismissed the case. Anyway, is there anyway I can get them to change the lates to non-lates.

Thanks

Dear Pat:

I've never heard of getting creditors to change lates to non-lates, especially if you were late.

Creditors won't change late to current, they claim that would be reporting falsely.

If you still owe on the loan you could ask them to "re-date", that is to delete past reporting and report from now through the end of the loan.

If they have had enough trouble with the loan that they took you to court, and you still owe on it, by offering to prepay the balance you might negotiate for them to not report it at all. Be sure to include a stipulation that they may give no information, including confirmation. Then when you dispute it with the credit bureau and they don't reconfirm the information, the whole item vanishes.
