I have a $300 collection account on my record that is the result of my never bothering to return my cable tv box after I canceled it 2 years ago. I'm wondering how the experts here would go about trying to get it removed.

I still have the cable box by the way. I was with Comcast Cable (I think) but they were bought out by MediaOne who turned my over to the collection agency. I may have signed something (without reading it) when they did the installation but am not sure.

Does it do any harm to dispute this with Experian even though I think they will consider it legitmate? Should I first contact the creditors and offer to pay the amount in exchange for deleting it from my credit report?

The only reasons I say this is semi-legitimate is because I think I read something from them somewhere that said they would send a guy to pick up the cable box and they never did. Also I doubt the used cable box is worth $300.

Also I'm wondering if I only have one collection account on my report how badly that will affect my scores? Does it do a lot less damage as it gets to 3 and 4 years old?

It sounds from what you have written here that the debt is legit. If that is the case and you owe the money, then there is no one to blame for the negative entry but yourself. However, you might try disputing the entry with the bureau in the hopes that the creditor does not have any record of you in their system and cannot verify the dispute. If they do verify, request proof of the debt in writing. Good luck.

You should contact the collection agency and offer to return the box and/or pay them the value of the box in exchange for deleting the item off of your credit profile.
