I received a letter from a collection company claiming that I owe $1700.00. When I called, they informed me it was a MasterCard account I had in 1985 that was "charged off" in 1987. The original amount was $300.00. The collection agency claims that the interest has been accruing since 1987 at 19%. Can an account continue to grow after it has been charged off. Should I pay it. They are offering a 50% discount on the total, but wonder after 14 years if it should be paid at all. Can it reappear on my credit report. Please help.

Yeah, don't pay. Check your credit though and dispute any reporting, it's way too old.

Fourteen years? I think not. Pay them nothing, tell them to stop calling you and make sure they didn't put any inappropriate nasty remarks on your credit profile.
