In late 1994 I wrote a check to a collector for 186 dollars. The check bounced so I went and got a money order immediately and sent it to them. They cashed the money order and then threatened to sue me for treble damages. I got an attorney, paid him close to 400 dollars, and he sent an entire slew of paperwork disputing their lawsuit on the basis that the cashing of the money order was payment in full. I never heard from the creditor again, and assumed that was the end of it. I am gearing up to buy a house so I ordered a copy of my credit report. It was on there dated for 12/95 ( a year later), and not only does the original item show unpaid, but it shows that I now owe 936 dollars. I disputed this, thinking the collector would realize their mistake, and it came back as valid!! I have since thrown all of the paperwork out to uphold the events that transpired. I thought it was a done deal, and that I had no worries on this. I can not remember the attorneys name for the life of me to contact him. I want this off my record, or at least a copy of my statement attached to my record. It has been more than five years and it still makes me so mad. I will not pay these people an additional dime. What can I do???

Keep disputing and try to somehow remember that attorney's name. Maybe you can get an old bank statement to show as evidence if it shows a withdraw of around $200 at the time you sent in your money order.

How bout asking them for the atty's name.

CAll the collector directly, have them pull your file and and look up the correspondence from you atty. Then just ask them which one it was that they have the documentation from as you use many atty's in your line of work. May sound dumb, but the person on the other end of the phone may not be that bright.
